Abstract. F. Coulon.- The «oseraie de Lanaye» (province of LiŹge, Belgium): management or massacre of a major site for orchids in Belgium ? [Natural. belges 80 (Orchid. 12) (1999): 89-93]. Brief review of the recent colonization by Dactylorhiza fuchsii and D. praetermissa var. integrata of spontaneous groves settled on calcareous dredged mud, in the Meuse valley. In 1994, that site, densely populated with thousands of Dactylorhiza, became a nature reserve. To prevent the groves densification unfavourable to orchids, a management of the site was decided. Taken by inexpert administrators and carried out by professionnal woodcutters, management actions, heavy and brutal, destroyed the fragile environment and led to a dramatic decreasing of the orchids populations. Presently, just brambles seem beneficiairies of that «management», which is denounced here.
